ARC Review: Kid Athletes

Title: Kid Athletes: True Tales of Childhood from Sports Legends
Stories by David Stabler
Illustrations by Doogie Horner
Publisher: Quirk Books
Publication Date: November 17, 2015
Source: ARC from Quirk Books
The author and illustrator of Kid Presidents have teamed up again to share twenty true tales from the childhoods of famous athletes.

From Babe Ruth (so incorrigible that his parents put him in reform school at age seven) to Muhammad Ali (who learned to fight at age twelve after a thief stole his bicycle), Kid Athletes is packed with inspirational stories from the world of sports. Billie Jean King rose from modest circumstances to win thirty-nine Grand Slam championships; race car champion Danica Patrick fended of bullies who told her "girls can't drive"; and martial arts legend Bruce Lee credited his success, in part, to childhood dance lessons.

Every goal, touchdown, and championship comes to life in these kid-friendly and relatable stories, all with Doogie Horner’s whimsical full-color illustrations. Kid Athletes is a slam dunk for young sports fans everywhere.

My Review

Hear, ye, hear ye, calling all kids and parents! If you're interested in sports, and want to know more about some of your favorite athletes' childhoods, then this is the book for you! And parents, if you know your son or daughter loves sports, please consider picking up a copy of Kid Athletes: True Tales from Childhood Legends. Not only is the book written in a kid friendly manner, but the stories inside are inspirational, and who wouldn't want their child reading inspirational nonfiction?

The first thing you need to know about Kid Athletes is that the book is by the same author and illustrator who brought you Kid Presidents. If you or your child loved that book and likes sports, then definitely grad a copy of David Stabler and Doogie Horner's latest to keep them engaged with what they love. It's full of the same color illustrations that made Kid Presidents a success, but this one will reach out to kids with a different set of interests - sports.

Kid Athletes is full of stories about some of the best sports heroes of the past and present - Booby Orr, Jackie Robinson, Billie Jean King, Gabby Douglas, Michael Jordan, etc. Not only are their stories inspiring, but the authors hone in on one specific event from their childhood to tell kids how each athlete overcame adversity and grew up to be the legend that he or she is or became. I really enjoyed this part of the book because I learned a lot about some of these athletes, so you know your child/children will learn more, too.

One of my favorite things about Kid Athletes is the little introduction at the start of every athlete's story. Even if your child doesn't know about a particular athlete, they will get a brief introduction to tell you a little about who the athlete is and what adversity they faced as a child. After reading the brief introduction, your child will be ready to read about sports history.

Another thing that I really enjoyed about this book is that there are all sorts of different athletes in this book. Not only are there are different sports represented, and there are athletes from all sorts of cultural backgrounds in the book. No matter what your cultural background, your child will be able to read about and appreciate everything these athletes went through as children to become legendary.

So if you're in the market for a new book for you're young reader, look no further than Kid Athletes. It would be the perfect book for an upper elementary student to read on his or her own, but it would also be a great book to read to your child before bed. I would definitely recommend this book to any child involved in a sports program, but I would also recommend it to kids who just love watching and analyzing sports. This would be a great addition to any kid-friendly or school library!

Author David Stabler and illustrator Doogie Horner have created many books. Their first collaboration was Kid Presidents (Quirk Books, 2014). Both live in New York City.
