What I'm Waiting On...

Title: Go Set a Watchman
Author: Harper Lee
Publisher: Harper
Publication Date: July 14, 2015

Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

Go Set a Watchman features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Returning home to Maycomb to visit her father, Jean Louise Finch—Scout—struggles with issues both personal and political, involving Atticus, society, and the small Alabama town that shaped her.

Exploring how the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird are adjusting to the turbulent events transforming mid-1950s America, Go Set a Watchman casts a fascinating new light on Harper Lee’s enduring classic. Moving, funny and compelling, it stands as a magnificent novel in its own right.

Why I'm Waiting...

To Kill a Mockingbird is just one of those books that sticks with you no matter how long it's been since you read it. I'm hoping that this sequel lives up to it and that I love it just as much as I loved Ms. Lee's first book.

Am I bit skeptical? Yes, but really... who isn't at this point? I don't doubt that she wrote it like some people, but it's been decades since she published a book. Any reader would be skeptical at this point. But I really, really want to check in with some of my favorite literary characters, and I am one hundred percent confident that I'll end up enjoying it.

What Are You Waiting On...

  1. I am with you on this one. I have my reread of To Kill a Mockingbird planned. I haven't read it since middle school (which is a VERY long time ago) and it has always stuck with me. Great pick!

  2. I still have to finish my reread of it. I was teaching it last month, but I didn't really need to re-read it because I've read it so many times. I'm close to the end of the book. I just have to get through the rest of the trial and the intense ending.

I cannot contain my enthusiasm for this one. I just need it in my life now! :)

  4. So I've never actually read To Kill a Mockingbird... *hides in shame* I have a lot of trouble reading classics, so... Yeah. D: I really hope you enjoy this, though! <3

    Thanks, Sandra! :)

  6. Don't hide in shame! To be honest, to Kill a Mockingbird isn't bad at all. It's a really easy-to-read and follow book, and not as stuffy as a lot of classics.

    Thanks, Aimee! :)

  7. Hi Erin! I don't think I've been here before (I'm so sorry! :O) but I have to say I LOVE that little owl up there, that's just GORGEOUS. Your whole blog is really nicely designed, I love it! :D

I'm in the camp that never read To Kill a Mockingbird. I'm with Aimee there - classics aren't really my things. I think Frankenstein and A Tale of Two Cities are the only classics I've read and liked.

Anyway, seems like you've got a really busy blog here, so I'll try to keep up with your posts - can't wait to see what else you've got going on around here!

  8. ooh you got a new design and I LOVE IT!! Kaitlin did an awesome job :) I read To Kill A Mockingjay back in freshmen year, and it had such a profound effect on me. I will always hold that book in a glowing light, and I hope to do the same with this book! Nice pick :)

This is why I shall allow YOU to read it first, then I'll decide after that ;) Thank you for being my guinea pig in advance lol.

(Also I saw that you have a concussion again?? I hope you're feeling better and heal up well!!)

  10. I'm still not finished with To Kill A Mockingbird :( But for some strange reason, I am really excited for this book. I agree with you that I hope it lives up to our expectation. I do love Harper Lee very much that's why I'm expecting so much. :)

  11. Hi, Brett! Welcome! :) I actually just had the whole blog redesigned, and I'm glad that you love it. It's so much more me than my previous theme.

I'm really good with most classics, but that's probably because of the whole English teacher thing. I just like taking time to get lost in them every once in a while. I'm actually due for one (because I've been itching to read one), and I don't know whether or not I should review it on my blog when I'm finished.

I do have a pretty busy blog. I'm actually in the process of slowing down a bit because I have a concussion, but I do have a lot of posts scheduled for later this summer.

  12. Thank you, Rachel. I love what Kaitlyn did for my blog. It looks so much more open and clean. :)

I read it during my freshman year too, and I just remember loving it. I spent the entire summer after thinking about it. :)

  13. Hey, I can be anyone's guinea pig. lol

Yes. I have a concussion again. I get them all the time. :( I'm just trying to limit computer time, especially when my head starts to hurt, but luckily, this one doesn't seem as bad as some of my past ones. It's just the bump on my head that hurts constantly and interferes with how I can sleep at night. Thanks, Kayla! :)

  14. You'll have to stop back when you finish it to let me know how you ended up liking it. I'll probably have a Reread Review up at some point for To Kill a Mockingbird because I'm rereading it at the moment.

And yes! Lee is an American legend, and I just love her. She's definitely one of my literary heroes.

  15. Yeah it feels like a really nice design!

    >I don't know whether or not I should review it on my blog when I'm finished.

I think this is a GREAT idea! Not too many people actually review classic novels - and I think analyzing a classic novel with a modern mindset is great. So I'd totally read a review like that!

  16. Thank you! :)

Awesome! I recently read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and I really do want to add a review of it. I think I'll draft that today, and get it started. Then it can be a bi-montly (or whenever) feature on my blog. I'm so glad that someone else thinks it's a good idea. :)

I put this on hold at my library soon after it was announced! I am still number like 20 but so far there are over 40 holds! I can't believe how fast this summer is flying by and how soon we will get to read this. Sure I am skeptical...but I'm still going to read it. lol :D

  18. Oh wow! I have had The Girl on the Train on hold for a while, and I'm number 700-something. I can only imagine what the waiting list looks like for this one at my library. I bet it's in the thousands.

I hope you enjoy it, Kay! :)
